BEHIND THE SCENES

In
Passing

Blink and you'll miss it.

THE FILM

In Passing (2026) is an experimental visual poetry anthology that explores the evolving perception of time across the human lifespan. Structured around a simplified division of four key stages of life - Childhood, Adolescence, Adult, and Old Age - the film combines montage, soundscapes, and poetry to capture life's fleeting moments, repetitive routines, and formative memories. Each section presents a distinct sensory and emotional perspective, reflecting how time is experienced differently as we age.

Through the emphasis on atmosphere, rhythm, and associative imagery, In Passing moves away from conventional narrative, encouraging a more reflective and introspective mode of engagement. The film considers how memories overlap and fragment, contributing to the sensation that time accelerates as we age. In doing so, it highlights the uncertainty of change, where personal identity and external circumstances are in constant flux.

DIRECTOR

As a director, I was interested in creating a sensory and emotionally driven piece that prioritises mood and reflection over a convetional script, encouraging the audience to engage with their own experiences of time and change.

CINEMATOGRAPHER

As cinematographer, it was essential to capture moments that encapsulated the essence of time passing through the perspective of each age. With a focus on senses and feelings, I aimed to document moments that allowed the audiences to reflect on their own experiences. My framing choices were deliberately and strategically planned to follow the egocentric view of a young child to an allocentric outlook on life as we grow older.

SOUND PRODUCTION

As Sound Designer, I strove to create an effective soundscape that complimented the evolving sections of our film, using a mix of poetry and instrumentation to convey our narrative. In combination with creative video experimentation, the use of ethereal synthesis enhances the mood and tone of the film, furthering narrative intent and creating a stimulating audio-visual experience.
